| Bush did his speech on Sunday, as planned. I wasn't able to find the transcript, though. (Do you care?)
Anyway, more recently, other news has been happening.
Sports Steroids
Former Cubs baseball player, Rafael Palmeiro,
tested positive yesterday for steroids. It looks like this guy, who now
plays for the Baltimore Orioles, lied in front of Congress earlier this
year about not using steroids. ''Let me start by
telling you this: I have never used steroids. Period. I don't
know how to say it any more clearly than that. Never.'' The hall-of-famer gets a 10-day suspension period.
In Hollywood...
"Wedding Crashers" is the top movie to see right now, in a close
second is "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Entertainment isn't my
favorite news subject, and I haven't even seen these movies anyway.
Help me out, I might be going to the theater soon, which movie should I
see?
Major International Crisis?!
Iran is planning to reopen one of its nuclear processing plants!
Hoping that the United Nations will become involved, France foreign
minister Phillipe Douste-Blazy said that European negotiators planned
to meet with the International Atomic Energy Agency's council of
governors.
"This Iranian affair is very serious," Douste-Blazy said. "It could be the beginning of a major international crisis."
Space Shuttle Discovery Space Repair
Astronaut Steve Robinson, one of the astronauts aboard Space
Shuttle Discovery, is preparing to pull out two pieces of "gap filler"
which are sticking out from the exterior of the shuttle. This will be
the first time that an astronaut repairs the exterior of a shuttle
while in orbit! More on this story later, after it happens. (Hopefully
it will go smoothly!)
Poll
Back to that steroids topic;
Do you think that steroid use should be allowed in sports?

| A bit too hot for the scouts I didn't get a transcript of the President's boy scout speech because.. there was no speech! Full story from CBS News here. "About 300 people, most of them Scouts, suffered from dehydration, fatigue and lightheadedness Wednesday — just days after four Scout leaders were killed at the national Jamboree while pitching a tent beneath a power line. " "Mr. Bush's spokesman said Thursday that the visit would instead happen Sunday, at the Scouts' request."
In sports... Vijay Singh and good ol' Tiger Woods put on a great show today at the Buick Open. The overall winner will be determined tomorrow at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club.
Flavivirus
You know it by the common name of "West Nile Virus," and the bad bug which carries it is biting again.
Be sure to stay inside during the mosquitos' peak hours, dawn and dusk. If you are outside, at least wear DEET-containing insect repellant!
New planet? Far out! Scientists have discovered a new planet in our solar system. Temporarily named 2003 UB313, the lump of rock and ice is about 3 times as distant as Pluto's distance from the sun! Talk it up! Scientists informally call the new planet "Xena", but an official name is still being approved by the International Astronomical Union. If you could name this new planet anything that you wish, what would the new planet's name be?

| Boy Scout Jamboree
The boy scout jamboree started on Monday the 25th. Every four years, this event draws thousands of young men to Fort A.P Hill, Virginia, a military base which has hosted the event since 1981. When Boy Scouts attend the Jamboree, it gives them a chance to earn merit badges, spend more time with their troop, and meet other boy scouts with similar goals.
Tragedy
On the very first day, a tragedy occured. During set-up, a tent's center pole fell into electrical wires, killing 4 leaders. What a way to start the jamboree!
From www.bsajamboree.org:
"The Boy Scouts of America extends heartfelt gratitude to the many people who have expressed their condolences and prayers for the families of the Scout leaders killed in the electrical accident on Monday, July 25. The Western Alaska Council's Web site,http://www.bsawac.org, provides details on where to send cards and memorial fund donations."
Senate Vote
On Tuesday, the Senate voted to allow military bases to host Boy Scouts of America (BSA) events. This vote is important for BSA, because there have been lawsuits recently which are trying to get rid of the government's aid to BSA.
President's Speech
President Bush is scheduled to speak at the Jamboree tonight. Come here later to get the transcript. (hopefully)

| Launch Successful
Space shuttle Discovery (STS-114) was launched as scheduled this morning at 10:39 EDT. Traditionally, the launch team celebrated the achievement with a brunch of beans and cornbread. First Lady Laura Bush watched the event and congratulated NASA employees. The President was not at the event but did watch it from the oval office on television.
To see the shuttle fly above you in your own backyard at night, go to heavens-above.com, print out some info for finding "STS-114," and look up! | | |
